History
On behalf of Gerard and Anton Philips (founders of the Philips Company) on August 31, 1913 a sportclub is founded to play different kinds of sports. In the beginning, the club is only available for workers of Philips. Frits Philips, the son of Anton Philips kicks off for the first official football match. After 1928, other people than Philips workers are allowed to play for PSV as well. Since 1914, PSV takes part in a competition and a few years later PSV already plays in the highest league of Dutch football. PSV wins the Dutch title for the first time in 1929. In 1950 it wins the Dutch KNVB-beker (FA-cup).

During in 1970's PSV has it's first golden period. With players like Willy van der Kuijlen (over 500 matches in the Dutch league) and the brothers Willy and René van de Kerkhof, PSV wins several national titles. In 1978 the UEFA Cup is won. In two matches in the final, PSV beats the French club Bastia. After a 0-0 draw in France, a 3-0 victory at home gives PSV their first European success.

The second half of the 1980's is the most successful period in the history of the club. Between 1986 en 1992 PSV wins the Dutch title six times. The absolute culminating point is in 1988: on May 25, PSV (with coach Guus Hiddink) wins the Europacup I (now Champions League) by beating Benfica after 120 minutes and penaltykicks. That same year, PSV plays Club Nacional de Football from Montevideo for the Worldcup. After 120 minutes of football, PSV looses the penaltykicks 6-7.

In the season 2004/2005, again with Guus Hiddink as coach, PSV makes it to the semi-finals of the Champions League. The first match in the San Siro Stadium is lost 2-0 but the match in the Philips Stadium is won 3-1. Unfortunately, this is not enough to reach the final. That same season, PSV wins the 18th Dutch title and the 8th Dutch FA-cup.

On 31 August 2013, PSV celebrates its 100-year anniversary.

Philips Stadium
Since the founding of PSV in 1913, PSV plays its matches on the same location. In the beginning of the last century Philips built the Philips village in Strijp (nowadays a district of Eindhoven). In this Philips Village, workers at Philips could buy affordable houses for themselves. Because it was the opinion of the Philips management that relaxation was important for their workers, a lot of sport clubs were founded.

The grounds of PSV Football were situated in the heart of the Philips village at the Frederiklaan. The picture below shows the entrance gate to the grounds.

The aerial photo (made in 1923; copyright KLM Aerocarto) shows the Philips grounds and the Philips village.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the cosy Philips grounds have been transformed into a magnificent stadium with a capacity of over 36,000 spectators. The pictures below show that the stadium is situated right in the centre of Eindhoven.
